The license activation will be done differently depending on whether you are using a USB dongle (hardware license key) or a software license key.
Hardware license key (USB)
After complete ALERT install connect the USB dongle, WINDOWS automatically recognizes it and sets it up. You can now launch ALERT software (Got to Start menu\Micromedia\Alert 4.0)
If the license file was present on the installation media, it has already been copied to the correct directory. WINDOWS then requests a privilege escalation in order to save the file.
If there no file, ALERT launches in demo mode:
When you'll have your licence file (.lic), click on "Register..." and add it (you need to have administrator privileges)
This file defines the options enabled.
As soon as the file is loaded, the options are visible below:
To finish you need to click on "OK" (upper right)
Note: Sometimes the dongle is not recognized. (if connected before ALERT installation for example ...) In this case, you will have to perform a series of operations.
See the article: USB protection key not recognised
Software licence key
In this situation, no dongle (USB license key) is needed. ALERT uses computer hardware components to generate a unique code.
At startup, ALERT displays the following box:
Double click on the software key to copy it (into Red box on the screenshot above). This number must be sent to Micromedia in order to generate the license file associated with this key.
When you'll received the licence file (.lic), click on "Register..." and add it, you need to have administrator privileges because WINDOWS will requests a privilege escalation in order to save the file. (click on "yes")
This file defines the enabled options.
To finish you need to click on "OK" (upper right)
